LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Georgia College Volleyball (5-3) bounced back from an early loss to open the Bellarmine Tournament Friday, claiming a thrilling five-set victory over the University of Charleston (W.V.) (2-7) to even out their record on the day.
In the first match versus Truman State University (4-5), the Bobcats were edged 3-1 after being closed out in a nailbiting fourth set, 25-22. Each of the four sets were decided by three points or less, with the lone set win for Georgia College coming in a 25-23 third frame.
Reigning Bobcat Athlete of the Week Libby Bochniak (Marietta, Georgia) paved the way on offense, striking for a match-leading 16 kills to go with 13 digs. Sophomore setter Lauren Talele (Woodstock, Georgia) tallied 28 assists in the contest, eight of which came in the second set. Truman State had three players with 11 kills each.
A late rally in the fourth set fell short after the Bobcats reeled off six straight points to take a 13-11 edge. However, Truman State regained the advantage with consistent play throughout the finish, staving off a late Georgia College comeback to seal the win.
Match number two of the day produced a back-and-forth contest, as the Bobcat women dominated a fifth and final set to defeat Charleston 3-2. Bochniak and Sarah Stewart (Savannah, Georgia) ramped up their performances, each notching 19 kills in the match, while Talele ran the offense flawlessly, putting together a solid performance with 44 assists — her fifth game this season eclipsing the 40 assist mark. Bochniak and Talele racked up double-doubles with 18 and 17 digs, respectively.
The Bobcats return to the court with a doubleheader tomorrow, Sept. 21, taking on Trevecca Nazarene University and Bellarmine University to close out the tournament. Match times are scheduled for a 9 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. start.
