SUMTER, S.C. – Play began for Georgia College Women's Tennis Friday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regionals. The Bobcats have a doubles pairing still alive in the winner's bracket after day one.
Doubles action was a highlight for the Bobcats, as sophomores Jordan Bowie (Macon, Georgia) and Emma Fleming (Suwanee, Georgia) teamed for a shutout of Elliott Peterson and Kayla Vaughan from Belmont Abbey College in the opening round. The Bobcat duo has drawn the No. 9-seed pairing from Flagler College, Paloma Martinez and Alessandra Traub. They will play tomorrow at 8 a.m. in the round of 32.
In singles action, Fleming out-lasted Augusta University's Anya Tarlouskaya in a three-setter in the opening round. Fleming won 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. She then ran into No. 9-seed Elaina Bompieri of Wingate University in the round of 64, resulting in a 6-1, 6-4 loss for the Bobcat.
Bowie was edged in the first round by Marissa Stevenson of Barton College 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. Bowie will take on Erskine College's Faith Wright in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
No. 16-seed Kim Yatribi (Frejus, France) was upset in three sets by Judit Gonzales Agud of Newberry College, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Yatribi squares off with Vicky Beardsley of Catawba College in the consolation tourney tomorrow.
