LAKELAND, Fla. – The Georgia College Golf team battled a tough Lone Palm Golf Club course Tuesday, posting a 307 to finish 12th at plus-37 for three rounds of the 38th Annual Matlock Collegiate Classic. The Bobcats had rounds of 305 and 289 yesterday on the par-72, 7,065-yard course.
Junior Austin Mancilla (Lawrenceville, Georgia) paced the Bobcats as he did for two of the three fall tournaments. Mancilla finished 14th at one-over, posting rounds of 73, 69, 75. He missed the top-10 by two strokes. The junior carded birdies on the par-four Nos. 9 and 14 today.
Second on the team and 32nd overall in the 75-golfer field was Daniel Davis (Columbus, Georgia). The sophomore posted rounds of 79, 71 and a team-low final round of 74 to finish eight-over. He had birdies on three of the four par-fives today.
Freshman Hilton Beck (Macon, Georgia) was 44th at 12-over. He owned a pair of 78s sandwiched around a 72. The final two Bobcats finished within a stroke of each other, freshman Isaac Samples (Loganville, Georgia) getting the better of sophomore Drew Duffie (Evans, Georgia). Samples was 63rd at plus-19 with 77, 78, 80 and Duffie finished 65th at plus-20 with 77, 77 82.
Just three teams finished sub-par, as No. 3 Lynn University won the tournament at nine-under. No. 1 Barry University came two strokes shy. Of the teams ahead of Georgia College, nine are ranked in the nation's top-25. Along with Lynn and Barry, the field had No. 2 Florida Tech, No. 6 University of West Florida, No. 7 Florida Southern College, No. 10 Nova Southeastern University, No. 13 Limestone College and No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Bobcats beat No. 23 Rollins College by two strokes. Barry's Jorge Garcia, the No. 3 player in the country, won the individual title at 12-under par, tying the single-round record for the tourney with a 64 today.
GC Golf is back in action Monday, Feb. 25 at the Hurricane Invitational in Albany, Georgia.
