EATONTON, Ga. –Powered by a top-25 slot for junior Harrison Stewart (Roswell) the Georgia College Golf team is positioned 15th at their home tournament, the 2016 Bobcat Invitational at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee.
The Bobcats improved from round one to the second, carding a 305 and 301 for plus-44 in 15th place in the 17-team field. The home tournament features one of the toughest fields the Bobcats will battle all season, as 11 of the 17 teams are ranked in the nation's top-30 by GolfStat.
Stewart had a blistering second round 69, one of just eight sub-par scores in round two. Combined with an opening effort of 78, the Bobcat junior is 25th in the 90 golfer field at seven-over par, just three strokes out of the top-10.
Second on the team and 47th overall is rookie Matty Hines (Woodstock), posting a 75 and 76 for 11-over on the par-70, 6,730-yard course. Sophomore Thomas Hodges (Monroe) is a stroke behind in 57th, carding a 74 and 78.
This being the team's home tournament, the Bobcats also sent four individuals to the course, led by junior Thomas Knight (Eastman) in 42nd. Knight had rounds of 70 and 80 for 10-over par. Juniors Nicolas Falkinhoff (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Harry Lambert (Suwanee) are both 13-over in 62nd. Falkinhoff had a 76 and 77, while Lambert managed a 78 and 75. Junior Conner Albright (Macon) had an 80 and 77 for 17-over par.
The Bobcats at plus-44 are just six strokes out of the tournament's top-10. Of the 14 teams ahead of Georgia College, 10 are in the nation's top-30. The Bobcats are ahead of national No. 13 University of North Alabama.
No. 8 Lynn University owns the team lead, 13 strokes ahead of No. 2 Saint Leo University in second. No. 5 Florida Southern College and No. 4 Nova Southeastern University are ahead of the tie between No. 6 Barry University and No. 29 Columbus State University in fifth.
There is also a tie atop the individual leaderboard, as Lynn's Jose Andres Miranda posted a 66 in round one, a low for this year's tournament thus far, but followed that up with a 73. John VanDerLaan joins him at one-under par after carding a 69 and 70.
The third and final round begins tomorrow, March 22 with the Bobcats taking to the course at 8:30 a.m., led by Chiappero. Bobcat golfers will be teamed with players from Peach Belt Conference (PBC) brethren Armstrong State University and Lander University.
