LAKELAND, Fla. – The Georgia College Golf team got its spring season underway this week, finishing in 14th place at an incredibly tough field at the Matlock Collegiate Classic Tuesday, hosted by Florida Southern College. The Bobcats improved steadily over the three rounds, carding scores of 312, 311 and finishing with a 307 for 66-over par.
All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) honoree David Sullivan (Woodstock, Georgia) finished 44th in the 75-golfer field, posting rounds of 79, 76 and 75 on the par-72, 7,065-yard Lone Palm Golf Club.
Not far behind at plus-18 was the duo of freshman Matias Chiappero (Santa Fe, Argentina) and junior Harrison Stewart (Roswell, Georgia) in 57th. Seeing his first action as a Bobcat, Chiappero posted rounds of 81, 78 and 75. Stewart bookended a pair of 77s around an 80 in round two.
Junior Conner Albright (Macon, Georgia) had rounds of 79 and 77 yesterday with today's 83 for 23-over in 68th place, while freshman Matty Hines (Woodstock, Georgia), also seeing his first collegiate action, had a 77, 86 and 80 for a stroke behind Albright in 72nd.
Saint Leo University won the team title at five-over par. Wind affected the final round today, causing the winning score to be above par for the first time in four years. Of the 13 teams ahead of the Bobcats at the tournament, eight are in the top-25 of the GolfStat Division II Head-to-Head rankings, including: No. 1 University of West Florida, No. 2 Saint Leo, No. 4 Nova Southeastern University, No. 5 Florida Southern, No. 6 Barry University, No. 8 USC Aiken, No. 11 Lynn University and No. 23 Rollins College.
Saint Leo's Liam Ainsworth won individual honors, finishing one-under at 215. He beat the field by just a single stroke.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Feb. 29 at the South/Southeastern Preview, hosted by Saint Leo.
