#18 GC Golf Takes Fifth, Advances to Match Play at NCAA Finals

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The No. 18 Georgia College golf team has advanced to quarterfinal action at the 2012 NCAA Division II Championships, taking fifth in stroke play and now advancing to Friday's match play. The top-eight teams advance to the quarterfinal round of match play tomorrow.

The No. 5-seeded Bobcats will take on national No. 3 CSU-Stanislaus, the stroke-play No. 4-seed in the national quarterfinals.

The national quarterfinal team match between GC and the Warriors will consist of five points with one point being awarded for each individual match. The two teams will be the early birds tomorrow, teeing off at 7:30 a.m. on hole No. 10. The winner will take on the victor of the No. 1-seed Chico State and No. 8 seed University of Central Missouri matchup.

The Bobcats shot their best round of the stroke-play tournament today, a three-under 285 on the par-72, 7,092-yard Cardinal Club Golf Course. GC finished two under for the three-rounds after carding a 289 and 288 the last two days.

Freshman Ryan Trocchio (Norcross, Ga.) was masterful today with just one hole above par, carding a 67. The PBC Freshman of the Year hit the ground running, birdying each of the first four holes. Trocchio jumped from 18th to fifth with that effort, combining his three rounds for a minus-six.

Junior Taylor Smith (Mansfield, Ga.) continued his consistent effort, following a pair of 72s with today's 71 for one-under in 15th. Smith started with a pair of birdies, and didn't bogey a hole until No. 15.

Junior Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw, Ga.) put up a second-straight 73 in today's action, finishing 19th with a three-round 216. Garrett carded four birdies, including the par-five No. 17 for the third-straight round.

Freshman David Sullivan (Woodstock, Ga.) posted a counting round, his best of the tourney with a 74. Sullivan finished strong, at par for the final eight holes. He finished 79th with a plus-13.

Sophomore Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) put a pair of 78's around yesterday's team-low 70, finishing 71st at 11-over.

No. 7 Chico State was three under today and ran away with first place at 13-under par. No. 1 Nova Southeastern University was second at nine-under. No. 13 University of Central Oklahoma was third, with No. 3 CSU-Stanislaus in fourth.

No. 2 Barry University, fellow Peach Belt Conference (PBC) school No. 14 USC Aiken and No. 34 Central Missouri also advance to the quarterfinals.

Josh Creel of UCO and Jim Knous of Colorado School of Mines both closed the 54 holes of stroke play tied for the top spot individually at a 10-under 206.

Creel topped Knous in a playoff to claim the 2012 NCAA Division II individual national championship. Creel shot par on the 18th hole in the playoff to get the win.

Sullivan gets the Bobcats started against the Warriors' Teddy Schrier tomorrow, May 18 at 7:30 a.m.
