#3 Georgia College Second at Bearcat Golf Classic Day One

GREENWOOD, S.C. – With a quartet of golfers under par, No. 3 Georgia College & State University golf holds the second spot of 16 teams after day one of the Bearcat Golf Classic Monday, hosted by Lander University.

Played at the par-72, 6,800-yard Greenwood Country Club, the Bobcats fired a 280 and 275 for a cumulative 555, good for 21-under par.

Senior Francisco Bide (Buenos Aires, Argentina), fresh off leading the team at the Bobcat Invitational a week ago, carded an opening-round tournament-low 66, following that with a 70 for an eight-under 136. Bide is tied for second, four strokes off the lead.

Classmate Niclas Johansson (Skanor, Sweden) shaved three strokes off his first-round 71 and stands five-under in sixth. Junior Billy Shida (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) owned the team’s best second round at 66, combined with a first-round 75 for three-under (141) in 12th.

Getting his first start of the spring, junior Matthew Yonz (Waycross, Ga.) is in the top-20 at 18th (71-71=142) in the clubhouse at two-under. Classmate Joe Young (Cochran, Ga.) is one-over par (145) carding a 72 and 73 in 29th place.

Host No. 11 Lander is the team leader at a mind-boggling 32 under par (278-266=544). The Bearcats’ Davis Lee posted a nine-under 63 in round two, and owns the individual lead at 132, 12-under par. Bide and Lander’s Bryan Newton are tied at four back.

The Bobcats finish the tournament with a single round, teeing off tomorrow at 9 a.m.
