GREENSBORO, N.C. – The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) released the Rawlings/ABCA Division II All-Southeast Region teams Wednesday, featuring three student-athletes from Georgia College, including Southeast Region Player of the Year Brandon Benson (Loganville, Georgia).
Benson takes the player of the year trophy as well as a spot on the first team at shortstop. Joining him on the first team is freshman third baseman Cal Gentry (Perry, Georgia), as both will now move on to All-America consideration. Junior outfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville, Georgia) took a spot on the second team.
Benson makes it a clean sweep of Region Player of the Year honors after hitting .395 with 22 home runs and 79 RBIs. The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Player of the Year as well, Benson tallied 74 runs scored to complete one of the best single seasons in school history. He is the third Rawlings/ABCA Region Player of the Year in school history, joining Dylan Cook last season and GC Hall of Famxer Chris Carr in 2001. All-time, eight Georgia College shortstops have been named All-Region through the ABCA, the most recent being Daniel Bick in 2013. The most recent first-team shortstop was Tanner Funk in 2011.
Gentry is now a consensus all-region honoree after hitting .441 with a home run, 42 RBIs and 59 runs scored. The PBC's batting average champion is the sixth GC Baseball third baseman to earn All-Region status with the ABCA, and joins Jason Backus' selection in 1997 as the only first-teamers among those six.
Mattix earns the first all-region honor in his career after hitting .366 with 12 home runs, 62 RBIs and 59 runs. A two-time All-PBC selection, Mattix is the 16th Bobcat outfielder to be named All-Region by the ABCA, most recently including Matthew Miller a season ago.
All-time, Georgia College has now had 63 student-athletes named to the Rawlings All-Region list since 1994.
The 2017 season has come to a close for Georgia College, a 35-15 campaign highlighted by winning the 2017 PBC Tournament after going 16-8 in league play. The Bobcats were an offensive juggernaut, leading the country in batting average and runs per contest. GC Baseball put six on the All-PBC Teams, with Benson being named the PBC and Southeast Region Player of the Year, while Gentry and now Mattix earning spots on the All-Region teams as well.
