MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Members of the Georgia College Baseball team continue to work hard this summer, competing in collegiate summer leagues across the country.
First baseman Clayten Ayres (Kennewick, Washington) is with the Walla Walla Sweets of the West Coast League. He's hitting .266 with a home run, eight RBIs and five runs scored. His RBI total ranks second on the squad.
All-Peach Belt shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville) is with the St. Cloud Rox of the Northwoods League (NL). He has picked up his numbers after a slow start, elevating the average to .215 with 13 runs scored, two home runs and 12 RBIs. The rising senior has swatted seven doubles, good for second on the team.
PBC Pitcher of the Year Cameron Busby (Grovetown) and All-PBC outfielder Logan Mattix (Loganville) are also in the NL, playing for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. Busby a 1.56 ERA to go with a 3-1 record and a team-best 10 appearances. He's struck out 23 over his 23 innings pitched. Mattix was Northwoods League Offensive Player of the Night a few days ago with a pair of home runs in the same contest. He's hitting .290 overall with three round-trippers and 15 RBIs. He has a team-high five steals, and has scored 22 runs to also lead the Rafters.
Also in the NL is Charlie Hecht (Johns Creek), pitching for the Kenosha Kingfish. He's 1-1 with a 4.84 ERA over five starts, owning 19 strikeouts.
Utility Garrett Green (Bogart) is in the Sunbelt League, playing for the Gwinnett Tides with catcher Kyle King (Johns Creek). Green is hitting .333 with three runs and an RBI. King owns a .167 average, but has scored twice and driven in four. Also in the Sunbelt with the Norcross Astros is Zach Schulman (Decatur). He's made two relief appearances, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing a pair of runs.
The Petersburg Generals in the Coastal Plains League boast an unprecedented four Bobcats on their roster, with catcher Brandon Purcell (Glennville) and All-Region outfielder Matthew Miller (Escondido, California) joining pitchers Grant Khan (Richmond, Texas) and Kane Keith (Hogansville) in Virginia. Purcell is hitting .289 with six runs, a pair of RBIs and three steals. Miller has played in just two games thus far, going 1-for-5 with three runs. Keith has looked strong in two relief outings, posting a 1.69 ERA over 5 1/3 innings, allowing just a single run.
Righty reliever Colin LoCurto (Kennesaw) is on the roster with the Covington Lumberjacks of the Valley Baseball League. He leads the team in appearances with eight, owing a 1-1 record and 3.17 ERA. He's fanned 10 in his 11 1/3 innings.
Righty reliever Brooks Luther (Dallas) and lefty Bradley Spinner (Roswell) are with the Sedalia Bombers of the MINK League. Luther has gond 16 1/3 innings in relief and owns a 1-1 record with six strikeouts. Spinner is 1-2 with a 4.20 ERA, tossing a team-high 30 innings.
Righthander Jonathan McKinney (Marietta) is a member of the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs in the Perfect Game League. He's had a strong summer, posting a 0.81 ERA over three games, a total of 11 innings pitched and just one run allowed. He's buzzing through bats with 21 strikeouts, good for third on the team. He owns the best ERA among any players with 10-plus innings.
