Bobcats Rebound to Take Series Over #5 Armstrong, 8-7 and 5-2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Senior Matt Kaplan (Alpharetta, Ga.) went eight strong innings in game two of Georgia College's (29-19, 19-10 PBC) doubleheader against No. 5 Armstrong (36-12, 20-10 PBC) to give the Bobcats a 5-2 victory after dropping game one 8-7.

Kaplan went eight innings surrendering just a pair of runs on five hits while striking out six to pick up his first victory of the season.

The Bobcats tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth after a Josh Young (Lake Havasu City, Ariz.) single drove in Bryce Williams (Manhattan, Kan.), who tripled earlier in the inning.

A Clay Ardeeser (Loganville, Ga.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth would give the 'Cats a 3-2 advantage, before an RBI double from Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the sixth stretched the lead to 6-3.

That was all the insurance the GC pitching would need, as Zack Hula (Kennesaw, Ga.) picked up his sixth save of the season in relief of Kaplan. Hula worked the ninth allowing just one hit while striking out a pair.

The Georgia College victory came after a tough 8-7 loss in game one, with the Bobcats nearly rallying to steal the win in the bottom of the ninth.

Trailing 8-4 heading into the final frame, GC would load the bases with no outs before back-to-back singles from Travis Echols (Suwanee, Ga.) and Maas cut the deficit to one.

Unfortunately, the Bobcats were unable to cash in on the opportunity as the Pirates hung on for the victory, effectively clinching the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) regular season title.

Tanner Funk (Kearney, Mo.), Echols and Maas all finished with three hits in game one as the 'Cats amassed 16 total as a team.

Pirate starter Chandler Hall picked up the win despite allowing 16 hits in eight innings of work.

Georgia College, who earned the PBC West Division title, awaits their matchup for the PBC Tournament set to begin Wednesday, May 9 in Columbus, Ga.
