#15 Bobcat Baseball’s Ward a Semifinalist for Tino Martinez Award

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College baseball’s senior rightfielder Shawn Ward (Evans, Ga.) was announced Monday as a semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award as Division II Player of the Year.

Now in its second year of recognizing the top Division II baseball player, the award is named after one of the top Division II players of all-time in former pro baseball star Tino Martinez.

Ward is one of 47 semifinalists from across the nation, including seven from the Southeast Region. Last year’s winner came from the region, as the honor was given to Erskine College’s Bryan Fogle.

The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Co-Player of the Year, Ward has put up gaudy numbers in 2011. A .398 hitter, Ward paces the PBC in RBI at 61, adding a slugging percentage of .612 and 49 runs scored.

Initial nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts and media members. A panel of media, coaches and sports information officers will be polled to finalize the candidates. The group will once again vote on the finalists, with a fan Internet vote also contributing to the crowning of the winner.

The finalists are scheduled to be named on Thursday, May 19. The winner will be announced after the conclusion of the DII Baseball Championship held in Cary, N.C. from May 28 to June 4.

Bobcat baseball was knocked out of the PBC Tournament Monday, May 9, and will await at-large selections for the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament. Selection announcements are scheduled for May 15.
