#8 Bobcats Start Series with Three Home Runs in 9-8 Win at Columbus State


MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Swatting home runs in the seventh and eighth innings, the No. 8 Georgia College & State University baseball team (27-10, 13-6 PBC) overtook Columbus State University (21-16, 9-9 PBC) 9-8 tonight (April 10).

Down 7-6 in the top of the seventh, designated hitter Buddy Elmore (Dallas) led off with a single. After an out, third baseman Brooks Robinson (Evans, Ga.) took a blast to the opposite field for an 8-7 lead. In the eighth, outfielder Derek Johns (Waynesville, Ga.) went to right as well for a solo shot, giving Georgia College a 9-7 advantage.

The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the ninth on an unearned run. CSU had two runners in scoring position with two out in the ninth, but closer Martin Dewald (Mannheim, Germany) got a flyout to first for his ninth save. Dewald's single season save number ranks second in school history.

Junior righty Kyle Cravey (Watkinsville, Ga.) picked up the win in relief, improving to 2-0 with 1 2/3 innings of work, allowing a pair of runs. Columbus State reliever David Lane dropped to 2-2 in the loss.

The Bobcats got the scoring started in the second inning, plating four. Robinson ripped a double down the left field line, scoring both Pete Paris (Scranton, Pa.) who had walked, and Steve Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.) who had also doubled. Shortstop ChandlerSnell (Loganville, Ga.) took a shot over the right center fence one out later scoring both Robinson and himself for the quick 4-0 lead.

Robinson finished 2-for-5 with four RBI and three runs, and Snell added a 2-for-5 game with two RBI and a run. First baseman Matt Pitts (Brunswick, Ga.) had three hits in five trips, plating a run, while Muoio was 2-for-4 with a run.

The Bobcats continue the three-game set with a doubleheader against CSU tomorrow, April 11 at 1 p.m.
