#27 Bobcat Baseball Pounds Pioneers in Pair, 4-2, 22-2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The bats came alive for No. 27 Georgia College & State University baseball (6-4) in the bottom of the eighth in game one and never went away, as the Bobcats swept Columbia Union College (0-2) 4-2 and 22-2 today (Feb. 17) at John Kurtz Field

Junior Steve Muoio (Rochester, N.Y.) ripped a two-run walk-off home run to take the first game for the Bobcats. Down 2-0 into the bottom of the eighth, Brett George (Dacula, Ga.) led off with a pinch-hit triple. Centerfielder Sean Harrell (Martinez, Ga.) followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 score.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, leftfielder Kyle Allen (Conyers, Ga.) walked and stole second, scoring on a pinch-single by Pete Paris (Scranton, Pa.) to tie the game. Paris' pinch runner was thrown out attempting to steal for the second out. Buddy Elmore (Dallas) had a pinch-single of his own with two out, and Muoio took a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence for the win.

Reliever Martin Dewald (Mannheim, Germany) had a perfect top of the ninth improving to 2-1. Pioneer righty Casey Cosgrove took the loss (0-1) with 1 2/3 innings of work.

In game two, the Bobcats got to Pioneer pitchers early and often, scoring in every inning but the bottom of the sixth. GCSU had a five-run second and a nine-run fifth, sending 12 hitters to the plate. Each of the nine starters had at least one run scored.

Big bats came from senior Derek Johns (Waynesville, Ga.) a 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs, ripping two doubles. Centerfielder Danny McCorkell (Wentzville, Mo.) had three doubles, finishing 4-for-5 with three runs and a pair of RBI. First baseman Matt Pitts (Brunswick, Ga.) was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs, ripping a three-run home run in the fourth. Sophomore Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) blasted a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the fifth.

Righty reliever Ryan Parson (Madison, Ga.) got the win (2-0), tossing the fourth and fifth, fanning one while surrendering no hits. Pioneer starter Michael Miller (0-1) went two innings, allowing eight runs in the loss.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m., hosting Armstrong Atlantic State University (6-3), kicking off Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play.
