MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Director of Athletics Wendell Staton announced that Georgia College Cross Country alum Matt Sutton has been named Interim Head Coach.
Sutton spent all four seasons with the Bobcats, competing in 15 career races during an injury-plagued career. He was the Georgia College representative to both the 2015 and 2017 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) All-Sportsmanship Team. He spent the 2018 campaign as Graduate Assistant Coach.
“I am grateful that Matt Sutton has agreed to serve as our Interim Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach,” said Staton. “Matt bleeds Bobcat Blue and Green and is a rising star in the industry. As a Georgia College graduate, he clearly aligns with and desires the values of our University, placing the student-athlete experience at the forefront of his coaching philosophy. We have an outstanding culture in our program and we look forward to continued holistic excellence under Matt’s leadership.”
Sutton took over for the exhibition track season in the spring after the departure of head coach Steven Cary to a new position at Southwestern University in Texas. Sutton is set to finish his Master’s in Human Performance at Georgia College in December, having already earned his undergrad in Exercise Science in 2017.
“I am incredibly grateful to Georgia College Athletics for providing me with such an impactful experience as a student-athlete and the opportunity to transition into a role of leadership,” said Sutton. “It is an honor and privilege to lead this tremendous group of men and women at this outstanding institution. By prioritizing the student-athlete experience, I look forward to maintaining a culture that helps student athletes grow into capable leaders that will succeed academically, athletically, and in the community.”
Sutton will receive assistance from Assistant Athletic Director and long-time Head Women’s and Men’s Tennis Coach Steve Barsby during this interim campaign. Barsby will oversee from an administrative role, freeing Sutton up to handle the sport-specific needs.
