Steve Barsby is in his ninth year as the head coach of the GCSU men's and women's tennis programs. He was named the Peach Belt Conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2005 after guiding the Bobcats to an 18-7 overall record, 6-2 mark in the PBC, and their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. He was named the PBC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year in 2003 after guiding the GCSU women's tennis team to one of the greatest seasons in school history. The Bobcats won their first outright, and fourth overall, Peach Belt Conference Regular Season Championship, as well as the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship. GCSU advanced all the way to the semifinals of the national championship tournament and finished with a No. 4 national ranking.
In 2007-08, the Georgia College men went 17-7 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth season. The Bobcats also finished runners-up in the Peach Belt Tournament, the best showing in school history. The 17 victories was the third most in school records, falling behind the 19-5 squad in 1989 and the 18-7 record in 2005. In 2007-08, the Georgia College women went 15-9 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th consecutive season.
Barsby is 153-84 all-time coaching women, including a 138-55 mark at GCSU. He's also 123-105 as a men's coach overall, with a 101-83 GCSU history. Barsby has coached 13 Bobcats to All-America status.
Barsby came to GCSU from Brock University in Ontario, Canada, where he taught sports management. Prior to that he was the head coach at Troy State in Alabama from 1995-97 where he guided the Trojan men's team to the conference championship in 1997. He was also honored as the Conference Coach of the Year following the '97 season.
He earned his undergraduate and Masters degrees in Physical Education from Troy State in 1995 and 1997, respectively. He was a four-year tennis player for the Trojans, earning All-Conference honors twice, as well as the Freshman of the Year Award.
He and his wife, Debbie, are the parents of son Ryan and daughter Riley. They live in Milledgeville.
