MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Georgia College Soccer (4-0) stayed undefeated on the young season Sunday, topping the University of West Georgia (0-2-2) 1-0 at a sweltering Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats are 4-0 for the first time in program history and undefeated after four for just the second time, as the 2008 squad started 3-0-1.
Battling the mid-90s temperatures, the teams reached the half scoreless but not through a lack of trying by the Bobcats. GC Soccer fired 18 shots in the first half and West Georgia goalkeeper Jackie Donaldson was up to the challenge, stopping all 11 attempts that were on target.
It took until the 78th minute to crack the scoreboard, when defender Erin Ferris (Atlanta) lifted a ball from midfield to the left side of the box. Senior Sofia Lekas (Lizella) gathered the long pass, turned and wrapped a shot around two defenders, finally breaking through on Donaldson. The goal was Lekas' second this season, and eighth in her career.
The Bobcats were able to ride out the remaining time to pick up their fourth win.
Senior goalkeeper Ashlee Graham (Decatur) was tested more than she has been in any contest so far this season, needing to make five saves for her fourth shutout in as many tries this year. Donaldson finished with 16 in the loss.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m., playing the University of Tampa at Valdosta State University.
