Stifling Defense Sends GC Women’s Basketball Past Albany State, 60-44

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – In what amounted to the second-best defensive effort for Georgia College Women's Basketball (3-4) this season, the Bobcats beat Albany State University (5-5) 60-44 Monday in the Centennial Center.

The Bobcats held the Golden Rams to just 44 points and 27 percent shooting (16-59) in the rout. Senior Alyah McGriff (Suwanee) led with 15 points and 11 rebounds, her third double-double this season.

Frontcourt mate Erin Drynan (Chicago, Illinois) hit 4-for-8 from the floor and all four free-throw attempts for 12 points with six rebounds and four blocks. Junior Sydney Cleveland (Gainesville) added 11 points, hitting three from long range.

The Bobcats never trailed, getting a Keyonna Wesley (Pearson) layup on their first possession and jumping out to a 12-5 lead with 3:04 left in the first quarter. The best defensive quarter for Georgia College came in the second, surrendering just four points and holding the Rams scoreless for the first 6:17. Wesley finished with a season-best eight points.

The only better defensive effort from GC Women's Basketball came Nov. 17 against Barton College, holding the Bulldogs to 40 points and 21 percent shooting.

Georgia College shot 40 percent (21-52) from the floor, and went 13-for-18 from the charity stripe (.722).

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m., travelling to Albany State to complete the season series.
