MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce its 2018-19 class for the Georgia College Athletics Hall of Fame. The first of the two inductees is Georgia College Softball alum Joni Frei.
One of the top hitters in in program history, Frei was a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region honoree. She played her best when it mattered most, taking spots on the NCAA Division II Championships All-Tournament Team and on the NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team, joining with fellow GC Athletics Hall of Famer Jennifer Joiner to guide her Bobcat squad to a National Runner-Up spot in 2003.
The first three-time All-Peach Belt Conference player in program history, Frei is the school's all-time total bases leader with 306, and ranks second with 24 career home runs. She ranks in the school's top-10 in virtually every offensive category, including second in both runs scored and doubles. A complete student-athlete, she was the first Academic All-District honoree in program history as well.
Frei will join previous inductees Joiner and Keidra Baitey from softball, Phil Arp, John Kurtz, Rusty Kea, Greg Winters, Chris Carr, Keith Slocumb and Tom Gorman from baseball, Duward Whelchel, Julia Roudkovskaya, Anna (Haggkvist) Sundstrom, Jay Torrence, Nancy Groesch, Lars Lindblom, Michelle Palethorpe and Lilia and Luiza Biktyakova from tennis, Robert Williams, Leonard Scott and Julius Joseph from men's basketball, Sherita Ballard and Betty Jaynes from women's basketball, David Robinson and Alex McMichael from golf, Missy (Thomas) Swicord, Martiny and Yeini (Gutierrez) Thompson from gymnastics, broadcaster Scott MacLeod, former athletic director and golf coach Michael Peeler, former athletic director and basketball coach Stan Aldridge and the 1981 National Champion Gymnastics Team.
