MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball squad (20-18, 7-7 PBC) fell to the USC Aiken Pacers (17-9, 6-4 PBC) in a doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon at the Peeler Complex, 3-2 and 5-1.
In game one, the Bobcats trailed early on a throwing error that plated two Pacer runs. The Bobcats would grab one in the fourth to cut the deficit in half and wouldn't answer again until the seventh. After a Shahlisa Shirley (Winter Garden, Fla.) single, sophomore Alex Duvall (Douglasville, Ga.) pinch ran and swiped second base.
Sparks doubled to center to put runners at second and third with only one away, when Caitlin Duvall (Douglasville, Ga.) singled to right field to tie the game at two apiece. The 'Cats wouldn't be able to add any more runs and Aiken scored on an error in the 10th to steal game one.
Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) pitched another phenomenal game, throwing all 10 innings, surrendering no earned runs and scattering five hits. Shirley had the only multi-hit performance of game one finishing 2-for-5.
In game two, the Bobcats found themselves tied at one after five, aided by a Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) single into centerfield plating one Bobcat. GC would not be able to muster any offense as the Pacers added one in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits. Okvist finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Okvist stole two bases on the day, increasing her season total to 43, and her career number at 67. After today's action, she now stands just three stolen bases behind Leigh Jacobs (1995-98) for first place on the all-time steals list at GC.
The Bobcats travel to Young Harris College for a non-conference doubleheader against the Mountain Lions Tuesday, March 27 at 2 p.m.
