PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 20 Georgia College men's tennis team (7-3) dropped a 6-3 match to a top-10 opponent in No. 8 Saint Leo University (11-3) Monday.
The Bobcats led 2-1 after doubles play, getting wins in the first and second slots. The No. 21 pairing of Yannick Hass (Troisdorf, Germany) and Vincent Castermans (France) beat Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti in a tough 8-6 bout.
Taylor Powell (Martinez, Georgia) and Jannik Kumbier (Neumunster, Germany) outlasted Egor Panyushkin and Netanel Alcabas 9-8 (7-5) in the second slot. Mattia Campus (Concorezzo, Italy) and Pedro Ecenarro (Santiago de Compostella, Spain) teamed for an 8-4 loss to Guillaume Vanelven and Fons Verberne.
The Lions took singles action 5-1 to win the match. The rally started with Vanelven taking down Anton Waern (Taby, Sweden) in the fifth slot 6-1, 6-4. Next came a 7-5, 6-3 win for Panyushkin over No. 22 Hass in the first slot.
Thelier edged Castermans in second singles 6-3, 7-5 before Sisti clinched the team win with a three-set battle over Ecenarro. The Lion fourth-singles player beat the previously-undefeated Ecenarro 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Alcabas topped Kumbier in another three-setter 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 before Campus ended the match on a bright spot, beating Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio 7-5, 4-6, 6-0. Campus improves to 4-1 on the year.
The loss ended a three-match win streak for Bobcat men's tennis. The three losses for the 7-3 Bobcats have come to No. 5 Armstrong State University, No. 8 SLU and No. 10 Valdosta State University.
The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, March 18 at 9:30 a.m., taking on No. 15 Midwestern State University.
