PEORIA, Ill. – Georgia College Baseball alum Brandon Benson (2017) was called up to the Peoria Chiefs this week, ripping a double and an RBI single as part of a 2-for-5 effort in his first game Sunday.
Benson went 10-for-43 with four RBIs and six runs for the Class A Short Season State College Spikes prior to the call-up to the Class A Full season in Peoria. Both teams are in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.
A consensus First Team All-American in 2017, Benson hit .395 with 22 home runs, 79 RBIs and 74 runs scored in one of the best seasons in program history. The two-time All-PBC shortstop ended his career on a 17-game hit streak and boasted 22 multi-RBI games on the season, including seven with four RBIs or more. Benson was named a finalist for both the Tino Martinez Award for DII Player of the Year and the Josh Willingham Award for DII Most Valuable Player.
Peoria is 22-12, good for second in the Midwest League Eastern Division. Former Bobcat teammate Logan Mattix (2018) is an outfielder for the Quad Cities River Bandits in the same league. The two teams play next Saturday Aug. 4.
