PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Georgia College Baseball squad (16-7, 5-4 PBC) split a doubleheader at UNC Pembroke (17-9, 3-6 PBC) Sunday. The Bobcats won the opener 9-6 before falling in the nightcap 7-3.

In game one, the Bobcats jumped out to a lead as large as 7-0, but couldn't hold the UNCP bats quiet. The Braves rallied to make it 7-6 after six innings, but Georgia College responded with two more runs and some shut-down pitching for the final three frames in the win.

Shortstop Brandon Benson (Loganville, Georgia) tallied five big RBIs on a 2-for-5 day, including a grand slam in the fourth. Rightfielder Wesley Wommack (Monroe, Georgia) went 2-for-3 and drove in three, tagging a two-run blast to left in the seventh to push the game out of reach.

Cal Gentry (Perry, Georgia) had three hits and three runs in the leadoff spot, followed by a 2-for-4 effort with two runs from catcher Brandon Purcell (Glennville, Georgia). The top three slots in the order went a combined 7-for-13 with 5 RBIs and six runs. Leftfielder Nate Schmal (Cumming, Georgia) had two hits, as did designated hitter Brendan Holler (Gilroy, California).

Perry Keith (LaGrange, Georgia) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs to improve to 2-1 on the year. Colin LoCurto (Kennesaw, Georgia), Logan Howard (Cumming, Georgia) and Grant Khan (Richmond, Texas) combined to toss scoreless innings over the last three frames.

Game two was a pitchers' duel until the sixth, when the Braves put crooked numbers up for three straight innings to pull away.

Wommack went 3-for-4 with an RBI, tagging a single to center in the third for the 1-0 Bobcat lead. Benson and Gentry each had two hits, each scoring a run as well. Starter Trevor Guthrie (Cumming, Georgia) pitched well in the loss (1-2), going five frames with just three runs on six hits.

The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday, March 21 at 4 p.m., hosting Erskine College in non-conference action.
